With the release (GA) of Salesforce’s new product, Revenue Cloud (formerly known as Revenue Lifecycle Management), there have been a lot of discussions regarding Salesforce CPQ and the future of the product.

In this blog, we want to tackle the big question everyone has, how does Revenue Cloud differ from Salesforce CPQ?

Firstly, CPQ is still relevant today and will continue to be so. CPQ is a mature, fleshed-out product that has years worth of documentation, implementations and more that can be utilised and benefited from by admins and users alike.

However, this does not mean that Revenue Cloud is not important, Revenue Cloud is the future of revenue management within Salesforce. This is a new product that is actively being worked on and improved by Salesforce and aims to go above and beyond current CPQ functionality.

So, what are the main differences between the two? We have laid out the table below to make it clear what the differences are and what is available for each tool – this is key for understanding which of the tools is currently best for your business. One thing to note, this is based on current functionality as of the time this blog was posted – Revenue Cloud is subject to change as more development goes towards the product with each new release (and there is a lot with each release!)

As you can see from the above, there are quite a few differences between the two tools as it currently stands. A key point to keep in mind for Revenue Cloud is that it is built on platform, with headless API, and therefore offers a lot more flexibility than CPQ due to its restrictions as a managed package. 

However, does that mean that CPQ should be ignored in your decisions? The answer is no, and deciding which tool to go for will vary depending on your current journey. There is no straightforward answer to which tool is best suited to your business. However, there are two main questions we can start with:

  1. Do you need a tool right now and are ready to go? 
  2. Or do you have more time and resources for a less mature product with larger potential? 

If you answered yes to the first question, then CPQ may be the right choice for you. Whereas if you answered yes to the second question, then Revenue Cloud may be better suited to your business needs.
