5 Ways to Work Better With Your Consultants

We do a lot of work with a wide range of clients, all who have varying levels of in house expertise, therefore all who need something slightly different from us. But what are the best ways to get what you need out of your automation consultants?

1. Cultural alignment

One thing we see that consistently drives successful working relationships is culture. The best work happens when personality and work style are aligned. Therefore, finding someone who meshes with your team is critical.

Another important part of cultural alignment is finding consultants who aren’t afraid to challenge your norm. You won’t progress as well without consultants, who push you to think bigger than you currently are.

2. Be clear about what you need

This is two fold. Clients are usually really quite good at telling us what tasks need carrying out, but one of the things we push for is clarity around goals.

It’s really important to find consultants who want to work collaboratively, and truly understand your business objectives, rather than just churning out the work. You will get more long term sustainable solutions this way.

3. Setting expectations

This is important from both sides. Your consultants will have ways of working, developed over years of experience of what works, however equally they need to be flexible and work in a way that fits with your business.

Setting expectations around communication and timeframes will ensure your consultants understand your deadlines, in turn meaning you don’t end up disappointed or frustrated. It will also help your consultants deliver on time and within budget.

4. When to lean

If you’re not leaning on your consultants for the right things, you’re probably not utilising the investment properly. Lean on them for the areas where you don’t have the knowledge or resource internally. Use them to help you make your team more successful, for instance getting them to train your team up.

5. Team relationships

Find consultants who can act as an extension of your team and who you trust. Keep them in the know when it comes to business goals and marketing plans. Invite them to any meetings you feel are relevant, and share any outcomes from the work you’ve been doing together.

The more insight you provide them with, the more empowered they will be to provide strategic guidance and help you achieve your goals.
